planning

The right reason to cancel is not weakness but the point where wind, storms, visibility, or heat remove the margin that made the original plan reasonable.

A first overnight goes better when timing, shelter, food, and sleep are planned around simplicity instead of packing every possible scenario.

A turnaround time protects you from optimism by deciding in advance when the route stops being worth pushing and starts needing a smaller plan.

Distance alone hides too much, so trail difficulty should be read through elevation, surface, exposure, weather, and how stable you feel on uneven ground.

A useful weather check looks at timing, wind, rain, exposure, and the full route window instead of one simple temperature number.
